I take it you mean with respect to lyrics, or to post 71 versions...with which I tend to agree (though the lyrics fit the time and place, and authors--nonDEAD--of the pop side of the 60s).

Even the early versions, with some outstanding jams, I am inclined to skip for an Eleven or what have you...but, I would still have to admit that they did some fine work on the extended versions in the late 60s, v early 70s.

The ones I saw ~ 78, however, were almost the epitome of the "disco DEAD" we so met with such disdain.

Dancing in the Street is an iconic song of the 1960s that took on deeper meaning as movements against segregation and the Vietnam War coalesced later in the decade. By the late 60s it was a protest song. And during that era more often than not they knocked it out of the park.

Hey S&R, til reading your post, I didn't know just how impt it became to Black community activists. Nonetheless, the straight up lyrics are pure pop. I wasn't refering to what it became, but the motivation of the writing/original contribution in 64:

"Dancing in the street had two meanings. The first is the one Martha Reeves asserted to reporters in England. The British press aggravated Reeves when someone put a microphone in her face and asked her if she was a militant leader. The British journalist wanted to know if Reeves agreed, as many people had claimed, that 'Dancing in the Street' was a call to riot. To Reeves, the query was patently absurd. 'My Lord, it was a party song,' she remarked in retrospect" (Smith 221)..."

Nonetheless, interesting reading (above just Wiki).

Thx,

For all I know the Dead played it as nothing more than a party song, but it does seem more than coincidental that the 5/6/70 show at Kresge Plaza opens with a big Dancin.

Good pt...with them you never knew if it's a "screw it! have fun anyhow!" notion, or (as they did in latter yrs) also a "make a statement on an issue, even if indirectly" (if that makes sense).

That's one of the stupidest things you've ever said here! Please listen to Phil in this Dancin' and see if you're able to make the same statement:

Why'd you get rid of the shitting cat you just posted?

Thanks for the Zappa link. Nice solo by Vai. It just so happens I was grooving to this awesome "Don't Eat The Yellow Snow" earlier today:

"paradiso perhaps?"

That's the name of an Italian Restaurant in my town, but no, I do not reside there unfortunately.

If you wanna e-mail me at rdenirojb87ATyahoo.com, I'd be willing to exchange info, so you can make your way on over here and attempt to back up your shit. If you really think I wouldn't say this shit to your face like you suggested, then you're in for a surprise. That is if your dumb ass actually manages to make it to make it here. I can be quite restrained here, knowing how many people are potentially reading my posts, but come see what happens when nobody else is around! I know you're all talk though, because they would never let you out of your ward, and you know that.

All in good fun :-) Unless your not having fun lol, but I sure am.

Too much non-music discussion. How about the Black Peter from that Cape Cod show!? Was there a more moving rendition performed in the latter part of the '70s? He's Gone > Other One is fantastic as well.

How about Zen Zen Korean BBQ in Fairview?

We can make a party of it...

The Banchan and Kalbi are excellent and the Bulgogi is to die for!

You and Rich can roll around in the parking lot and then consume copious amounts of beer and Sho Chu!

That's how I often used to spend my weekends, albeit never with Rich. That idea sounds excellent! Although ample amounts of beer should be consumed prior to the parking lot romping, to heighten the experience.

I have wanted to try that place, and it's only about 30 minutes from me. It seems you're well-versed in good restaurants in the NY, and now apparently NJ area. I have heard that place is THE best Korean BBQ in the tri-state area. Should I believe the hype?

How about it Rich!? I'll get in touch with the Institution your at and see if they'll release you for a day.

So is this match to be decided on two falls and a submission or just a straightforward 'I quit'? We geographically challenged types are going to have to rely on you for photographic evidence of this epic(urean) bout, Cliff.
